Also
comparatively close to Arusha ( 120 km ) is the Tarangire National Park
which gets its name from the river that threads its way through the length
of the reserve. The Park was made as the protection ward of a guilty rhinoceros
originally. It is famous for its dense wildlife population which is most
spectacular between June and October. During this time, thousands of animals
- wildebeest, buffalo and fringe-eared oryx migrate from the dry Maasai
steppe to the Tarangire River looking for water. Lion and other predators
follow the herds.
Tarangire with its many baobab trees growing in open acacia woodland is
an ornithologists' paradise rich in birds of pray and an incredible diversity
of avifauna.
