Katavi National Park is remote, hard and wild. It is on high, wide flood plain surrounding Lake Chala in southwestern Tanzania.
It is on the Rukwa Valley, a minor fault of the Western Rift Valley and
spans over a million acres (4,471 sq.km.). Across the vast seasonal flood
plain run the great herd of buffalo (over 1,600) in East Africa - thick
as bison in nineteenth century Kansas. Hippos mass along the creeks, grazing
at night and sparring in the high heat of the day. There are many crocodiles
and elephants shake the fruit from the great borassus palms while a flock
of while pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) fly past. This is truly the land
of mega- herbivores, a rare echo of the Pleistocene drama played out in
a landscape as yet untouched by the hand of man.
