Visa information

In principle, all visitors must obtain visa prior to entering Tanzania, except nationals of the East African Community, Hong Kong, Macao, Rwanda, Romania and Commonwealth countries (excluding Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, India, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, South Africa and United Kingdom). You must apply for and obtain a visa from a nearest Tanzania Embassy, High Commission or a Consulate before proceeding to Tanzania. Please, check with the Embassy to confirm if you believe you do not require any visa to enter Tanzania.

Visa holders are subject to normal Immigration control at the port of entry.
They should therefore carry with them documents submitted with their applications, for possible presentation to Immigration officers.

Visas

There are two types of visa.

  1. Travel visa

    Travel visa is granted to foreigners who wish to enter and remain in the United Republic of Tanzania for a certain period of time.
    Types of entries, validity of visa/passport and duration of stay for this category of visa are as follows:

    • Single entry travel visa・・・・A validity of three (3) months with effect from date of issue and a maximum period of stay of ninety (90) days.
      Remaining validity of the passport at the time of issuing such visa shall not be less than six (6) months.
    • Double entry travel visa・・・・A validity of six (6) months with the effect from date of issue and a maximum period of stay of ninety (90) days in total.
      Remaining validity of the passport at the time of issuing such visa shall not be less than nine (9) months. (Not available for Leisure & Holidays (A1), Visiting friends and relatives (A2) visas)
    • Multiple entry travel visa・・・・A validity of twelve (12) months with the effect from date of issue and a maximum period of stay of one hundred and twenty (120) days in aggregate, provided a single stay shall not exceed ninety (90) days.
      Remaining validity of the passport at the time of issuing shall not be less than sixteen (16) months. (Not available for Leisure & Holidays (A1), Visiting friends and relatives (A2) visas)

    Travel visa has the following categories (the purpose of entering the United Republic of Tanzania):

    Leisure & Holidays (A1) | Visiting friends and relatives (A2) | Missions (B1) |

  2. Transit Visa

    Transit visa (C2) is issued only to travelers with onward tickets, sufficient funds for the crossing in Tanzania, and an entry visa for the country of destination (or any proof that prior arrangements have been made that satisfy this requirement).

    ※There are only two types of entries for the transit visa, which are, single entry transit visa and double entry transit visa. The maximum duration of stay for the transit visa are 3 days and 6 days (in total)for the respective two types of entries.

    3. ※Entry to Tanzania for purposes of employment, studies, voluntary work or any other related of stay for long term are advised to apply for the corresponding residence and working permit.
    The application should be submitted to the Director of Immigration Services at the Immigration Headquarters. For more information, please visit ： Ministry of Home Affairs.

Visitor's Pass

Applicants who intend to travel to Tanzania for business purposes will be issued a Visitor's Pass, which has words "CARRYING ON TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT (CTA)".

This pass will be issued on arrival at the entry point and is valid for 2 months only, from the date of issue.
For obtaining a visitor's pass, fee of US$200, Company's Recommendation Letter or an Invitation Letter and 2 photos should be submitted during the application. However, before traveling they are requested to obtain a Travel visa from the Tanzania Missions abroad.

※Visitors traveling to Tanzania for volunteer purposes are expected to apply for "Other business (B3)". However are exempted to apply for a Visitor's Pass. They should therefore carry with them documents submitted with their visa applications, for possible presentation to Immigration officers.

Application Procedures

The Embassy is open for visa application in the following hours, excluding Japanese and Tanzanian National Holidays. [●Tanzania National Holidays]

  5. A photocopy of Return Ticket or Flight Confirmation Slip
  6. Recommendation Letter from Company/Organization/School or an Invitation Letter from the Tanzania counterpart (Unnecessary for Leisure & Holidays (A1) | Visiting friends and relatives (A2) visas)
  7. Note Verbal (Diplomatic or Official purpose only)
  8. A proof that the applicant needs to enter Tanzania frequent times
    (Double/Multiple entry visa applicants only)
  9. A pre-paid self-addressed stamped envelope (For postal application)

PLEASE NOTE

  • All supporting documents must be submitted when applying for your visa.
  • Valid passport with sufficient number of unused pages for endorsements abroad is required.
  • Visa application form must be signed by the applicant.
  • If the applicant is a minor, a parental authority has to be submitted.
  • We are not responsible for any losses or troubles if you apply visa through postal service.
  • We will not accept postal visa application from travel agencies.
  • A pre-paid self-addressed stamped envelope is required for all postal application. (Pre-paid registered mail)
  • Please ensure that the visa form is correctly filled and relevant supporting documents as well as correct fee are enclosed before submitting your application to ensure prompt processing of your application. In addition, when submitting through mail, please send all the necessary documents, passport (original) and application fee (in cash), etc. together by registered mail (cash envelope).
  • It takes up to 10 working days to process all visa applied through postal service.
  • If you reside outside of Japan, it takes up to 14 working days to process visa applied through international postal service.
  • Once visa issued, fees will not be refunded.

Journalism/filming and Research Permit

Visas for journalism/filming and research will only be granted after the applicant has obtained a permit from the Tanzania Information Service　（MAELEZO）and Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology（COSTECH）respectfully. The application procedure for each permit is as follows.

Gratis visa

Diplomatic/Official passport holders will be granted gratis visa, except when traveling on unofficial capacity in which case they are subject to pay prescribed fees.
This also applies to Laissez-passer holders of the UN, SADC, AU and other International Organizations recognized by the United Republic of Tanzania.
